On the sofa, on clothes, on the rug: cat hair ends up everywhere. You will not make it disappear, but you can cut the amount noticeably. You only need to act at the source, on the cat, then on textiles and cleaning.
Why your cat sheds so much
A cat renews their coat continuously. Loss increases noticeably in spring and autumn, at shedding time. In cats that live indoors, with artificial light and heating, shedding is often less marked, but it spreads across the whole year.
The amount also depends on the coat: a long-haired cat or one with a dense undercoat sheds more.
When the loss is not normal
See your vet if you notice bald patches, redness or scabs, or if your cat scratches or licks themselves much more than usual. These signs can come from parasites, an allergy, an illness or stress.
Brushing, what changes most
Every hair removed by the brush will not end up on your sofa. Brushing also limits the hair swallowed during grooming, and therefore hairballs.
- Short-haired cat: once a week, more often during shedding.
- Long-haired cat: several times a week, even every day during shedding, to avoid tangles.
Which tool to choose
- A rubber glove or brush for short hair. Most cats accept it well.
- A metal comb to untangle long hair.
- A fine pin brush to remove the undercoat, to be used gently, without pressing.
Getting them to accept the brush
Start with very short sessions, when your cat is relaxed. Brush in the direction of the hair, starting with the areas they like, such as the cheeks and back. Stop before they get annoyed, and finish with a treat. With time, some cats even come asking for their session.
If your long-haired cat has tight tangles, do not cut them with scissors close to the skin, as the risk of injury is real. Ask your vet or a groomer.
Diet and hairballs
A healthy coat sheds less and shines more. A complete diet, suited to your cat's age, helps. If their coat becomes dull or brittle, talk to your vet before adding a supplement.
If your cat often vomits hairballs, mention this too. More frequent brushing helps, but repeated vomiting deserves an opinion.
Protecting your textiles
A cat leaves their hair where they lie. Rather than cleaning the whole sofa, protect their favourite spots.
- A blanket on their spot, which you shake out or brush regularly. Cats like to settle on our alpaca blankets, in alpaca and wool. Do not put them in the machine: brush them to remove the hair, and have them dry-cleaned when needed.
- Removable covers on cushions, easy to wash.
- Tightly woven fabrics, where hair clings less than in bouclé or velvet.
- A colour close to their coat, for a sofa that stays presentable between cleans.

Cleaning, with the right tools
- A vacuum with a textile brush, to pass over the sofa and rugs twice a week during shedding.
- A slightly damp rubber glove: passed over a fabric, it rolls the hair into little balls that are easy to pick up.
- A rubber squeegee for rugs and carpet.
- A lint roller for clothes, just before going out.
Before washing a garment or a washable textile, remove as much hair as possible dry. Then clean your washing machine filter.
Air the home every day. If you or a relative are allergic, talk to your doctor: brushing and cleaning reduce the amount of hair, without treating the allergy.
A routine that is easy to keep
It all rests on regularity. A short routine, repeated every week, is worth more than a big clean every month:
- every day, a few minutes of brushing during shedding and a pass of the glove over their favourite spot;
- twice a week, the vacuum on the sofa, rugs and their beds;
- every week, the blanket brushed and shaken outside or at the window;
- every month, the washable covers and their cushions in the machine.
In short
- Brush your cat every week, more often during shedding.
- Loss with patches, redness or itching warrants a vet's opinion.
- Protect their favourite spots with a blanket or a cover.
- A rubber glove, squeegee and suitable vacuum do most of the cleaning.
